ok, wiki nu e autoritate. situl organizatiei in cauza e?

Can you believe this? A scris si Nature despre asta, dar articolul nu e disponibil in intregime.

Un articol aparut pe 5 octombrie in revista "Chemical Biology" apartinand American Chemical Society ofera sperante in lupta impotriva bacteriilor:

QUOTE
A Biosynthetic Strategy for Re-engineering the Staphylococcus aureus Cell Wall with Non-native Small Molecules.
Nelson JW, Chamessian AG, McEnaney PJ, Murelli RP, Kazmiercak BI, Spiegel DA.

Department of Chemistry, Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut 06520.
Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a Gram-positive bacterial pathogen that has emerged as a major public health threat. Here we report that the cell wall of S. aureus can be covalently re-engineered to contain non-native small molecules. This process makes use of endogenous levels of the bacterial enzyme sortase A (SrtA), which ordinarily functions to incorporate proteins into the bacterial cell wall. Thus, incubation of wild-type bacteria with rationally designed SrtA substrates results in covalent incorporation of functional molecular handles (fluorescein, biotin, and azide) into cell wall peptidoglycan. These conclusions are supported by data obtained through a variety of experimental techniques (epifluorescence and electron microscopy, biochemical extraction, and mass spectrometry), and cell-wall-incorporated azide was exploited as a chemical handle to perform an azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction on the bacterial cell surface. This report represents the first example of cell wall engineering of S. aureus or any other pathogenic Gram-positive bacteria and has the potential for widespread utility.

In numarul de saptamana trecuta al revistei New Scientist a aparut prima parte a seriei "Fifty Ideas That Will Change Science Forever", cea despre ideile revolutionare din sectorul "Life and Earth".

Au publicat recent si un articol in New England Journal of Medicine (una dintre cele mai bune reviste de specialitate in domeniul medicinei).
Important este ca in continuare descoperirile lor sa se materializeze in tratamente eficiente impotriva cancerului.

Un alt articol promitator in domeniul oncologiei este cel intitulat "Suppression of Antitumor Immunity by Stromal Cells Expressing Fibroblast Activation Protein–Alpha" si aparut acum vreo saptamana in revista Science (doar rezumatul e disponibil gratuit).

QUOTE
Since he was a toddler, six-year-old Nicholas Volker’s intestine had been dangerously inflamed, necessitating a hundred surgeries including the removal of his colon. No one knew the cause, but it seemed certain that the boy was dying. In a desperate attempt to figure out what was wrong, doctors at the Medical College of Wisconsin did something desperate and unproven: they sequenced his DNA.

The doctors found a mutation that nobody expected, but that seemed to explain his condition and also dictated a treatment: a bone marrow transplant of cells taken from umbilical cord blood. It’s early to say for sure, but the treatment seems to have worked. Nicholas is now six, and is doing well, although he still takes drugs to prevent transplant rejection and will need more reconstructive surgery. When I spoke on the phone with his mother, Amylynne Santiago Volker, last night, Nic was running around with a plastic sword.

Probabil ca ati auzit de colesterolul bun numit HDL (i.e. high-density lipoprotein) colesterol. El are efecte contrare colesterolului rau, LDL (low-density lipoprotein) colesterol.

Sperm mystery solved
Scientists identify the channel by which progesterone activates sperm to swim toward an egg

Scientists have solved a 20-year mystery regarding the molecular mechanism by which human sperm detect an egg. The answer lies in a unique ion channel that senses progesterone, causing an influx of calcium into the sperm cells.

The finding, published in a pair of papers this week in Nature, provides a clue to some types of male infertility, and could someday be the foundation for a non-hormonal contraceptive.

"It's a real step forward," said Steve Publicover, who studies human sperm at the University of Birmingham in the UK and was not involved in the research. "It gives us a handle on what is going on in sperm."
